Pumice is an abrasive powder available in several grades, the finest being FFFF (4F). To obtain that “hand rubbed” semi-gloss effect on varnish or lacquer, rubbing the surface with pumice and water or oil will give a smoother surface quicker and easier. As shellac is not waterproof, oil and pumice are used.
